NotesMIDDY MALONE’S MAGAZINE volume 2 #3 is an anthology comic published by Fatty Finn Publications in March 1947. It features the introduction of RIPON by Yaroslav Horek, the title strip MIDDY MALONE by Syd Nicholls, and BUSTER BRADDOCK by Les Such – a pirate story between two science fictions. There’s also a 2-page factual text piece, and a 1-page text story.

Syd Nicholls (the pen name of Sydney Wentworth Jordan) was an Australian cartoonist best known for his character Fatty Finn. Fatty is a character who holds a position similar to that of Dennis the Menace (US or UK version), though perhaps a more positive one. Fatty Finn initially ran from 1923 to 1933. While principally a humorous character, Nicholls sometimes introduced more adventure story elements, but was instructed by editors to go back to humour. Even before Fatty Finn was cancelled, Nicholls created the pirate character Middy Malone to satisfy his desire to write adventure stories. Nicholls had trouble finding a publisher for the character, trying in both Australia and America. Late in the 1930s, he set up a publishing company to bring Malone to the public (as well as a weekly comic featuring Fatty Finn). The Middy Malone Magazine allowed him to provide a place for other Australian cartoonist to publish adventure strips. His publishing venture went bust in 1950, and he again placed the Fatty Finn character in the newspaper at the end of 1951. Fatty Finn’s second newspaper life ran until Nicholls’ death in 1977.

You’ll see William Dampier mentioned in the introduction of the Middy Malone story. William Dampier is a historical figure, an English explorer, pirate, navigator and naturalist – the first person to circumnavigate the world three times! During his travels, he was the first to record some words from other languages that have become part of English, including avocado, barbecue and chopsticks. His piratical endeavours (both as a pirate or under royal licence as a privateer) meant that he gathered considerable treasure, and there were tales that some treasure was hidden – and it’s being sought in the Middy Malone stories. William Dampier is no stranger to Australian comics - you’ll find a story featuring him in True Pirate Comics #7 here in the Australian and New Zealand section of Comic Book Plus.

Great stuff! The Highlights for me. Seeing early work by Horak - nice Spacesip, nice cover too. I also liked the CONQUEST - Man's eternal struggle for life. And Syd Nichols non Fatty Finn work is not half bad. Cheers!
